Birds at risk

Problem : Out of the some 245 bird species observed in the park, 22 are at risk because of habitat loss and deterioration, and declining insect populations.

Inventorying and monitoring. The park conducts inventories and monitors bird species at risk along the Mille Îles River. For instance, it takes part in a marsh monitoring program, to identify least bitterns and other birds.

Monitoring peregrine falcon nesting sites. The park has partnered with a private company to protect peregrine falcon nesting habitats on quarry walls. Biologists monitor these sites with the help of volunteer birders.

Protecting and creating habitats. The park protects important sites for birds, like the Grand Marais. It also installs nesting boxes along the river to make up for habitat loss.

Inventorying and protecting snags. Standing dead trees are important habitats for many species.

Include lots of native species in your landscaping, with a variety of plants that produce fruit and seeds. Install nesting boxes and birdbaths and stop using pesticides. Take part in inventories.
